InSAR and Landslide Detection: Protecting Rail

Landslides are a major threat to rail networks, leading to track damage, service disruptions, and costly repairs. Rail stakeholders face the challenge of detecting hazards early. They also need to predict where these hazards might happen to prevent serious failures.

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) says that landslides and other ground problems cause many train derailments each year. These issues lead to track closures and cost millions in damage and delays. The Railway Safety and Standards Board (RSSB) estimates that landslides cost the UK rail industry more than £50 million each year. This amount includes maintenance and operational disruptions.

InSAR and Comprehensive Remote Sensing

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) captures high resolution satellite images of the Earth and can detect natural hazards. Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) is a method that uses a series of high-quality SAR images. These images come from the same area and help measure movement in near real time.

InSAR technology can detect ground movement with great accuracy. It helps find early signs of landslides near rail tracks. Beyond radar images, adding topography, geology, hydrology, optical data, and soil moisture readings can create detailed risk maps.

By combining these different data sources, we can create advanced geohazard maps. These maps provide insights into where landslide activity may happen. This information helps stakeholders plan and reduce risks effectively.

Enhanced Safety

Through early detection and using predictive mapping, rail operators can act quickly. This helps protect vulnerable areas and greatly lowers the risk of accidents, potentially savings lives.

Cost Savings

Proactive monitoring and targeted maintenance reduce the need for extensive repairs, lowering overall costs and preventing costly service disruptions.

Operational Continuity

Continuous surveillance and early intervention help maintain track integrity, ensuring reliable rail operations and minimising downtime.

Sustainability

Effective landslide detection and management extend the lifespan of rail infrastructure, promoting long-term sustainability and reducing negative environmental impact.
